Michikazu Sakai
Kagawa, Japan

Born in 1975 in Suzaka, Nagano, Michikazu’s father made pottery, but it didn’t capture Michikazu’s attention until he was in high school.  He went on to graduate from Okayama Prefectural Bizen Ceramics Center, where he met his wife, Tomoko.  His ceramics are Oribe ware, a style of Japanese pottery that dates back to the 16th Century.  Using a firewood kiln he built, his pieces are full of character and meant for everyday use.
