BARRY CANTER
New York, New York

Canter lives in Brooklyn, and often travels to the Hudson Valley where he finds inspiration from natural artifacts that appear to be designed by an artisan. Just as objects in nature exist for their own purpose, Canter captures in his ceramic vessels a self-justified oneness. He pares away references to familiar forms, and works on one piece at a time to achieve a singular focus.

Over the last five years he’s put in 40+ hours a week, using traditional slab construction to build vessels based on the scale of his hand. The resulting forms are sensuous and inviting to touch, offering a place for the hand to fit comfortably. They are asking to be picked up, just like the objects that inspired them.

You never know when you’ll find your voice, your calling in life, or when pottery will become more than just a hobby.  For Barry Canter, it wasn't until he found his midtown studio that he began a daily devotion to his ceramic practice.  Over the last five years, he’s put in 40+ hours a week, using traditional slab construction to build vessels based on the scale of his hand.  The resulting forms are sensuous and inviting to touch, offering a place for the hand to fit comfortably.  They are asking to be picked up, just like the objects that inspired them.
