JÖRG PIETSCHMANN
HAMBURG, GERMANY

B. 1963
WOODCARVER

Renowned for hand-carving striking, richly grained wooden furnishings, tableware, and sculptural work from fine German timber, Jörg Pietschmann is a modern master of the ancient art of woodcarving. Working with locally sourced trees ranging from oak to beech, olivewood to maple from the woods near his remote studio outside of Hamburg, Pietschmann begins his artistic process by studying the morphology and internal structure of a given tree, deciphering its grain patterns, curves, knots, and cracks to guide him to each piece’s final form. Whether crafting a table, bench, or bowl, pride of place is always given to his material through natural, heritage methods of shaping, detailing, burning, brushing, staining, and coloring by hand, and the quietude of traditional Japanese wood joinery.
