The Lentium Lamp, one of two new Roman and Williams Guild Original Designs, marks Stephen Alesch and Robin Standefer’s first exploration of the deep traditions of cast glass and metal in lighting. Both new forms—Lentium Sconce and Lentium Lamp—are named for and inspired by lens-like objects used across artistic and industrial mediums to focus and defocus light beams.
Following Alesch and Standefer’s original prototypes, a husband-and-wife team in the Northeast specializing in artistic metalwork cast the Lentium’s metal pieces to feature rich texture, forging, machining, and tooling each fixture entirely by hand. The semi-cylindrical shades are entrusted to a generational Venetian studio, where master artisans employ fire and breath in the passed-down centuries-old traditions of Murano glass factories to capture the thick, bubbled glass and ideal illumination. Tugging at threads of American industrialization and the dawn of Italian glass art, the new, original Lentium collection delivers a narrative beyond time and place.

About the Designers
Stephen Alesch and Robin Standefer are the founders and principals of Roman and Williams, Roman and Williams Guild, La Mercerie, and Guild Gallery. In addition to finding and assembling the world’s most prodigious artists for their modern guild of the senses, the husband-and-wife team prolifically makes, creates, and leads. In their work, nature serves as a timeless source of inspiration for the future of how we live.
The Lentium’s curved cast glass shade bends and diffuses the light that passes through it, creating a soft transfixing glow against the solid cast bronze armature.
Structural elements are further celebrated in their function and beauty by the large hand-forged bronze screw affixing the glass to its metal base.
