Defined by its signature crackled finish, achieved by submerging glass in cold water fresh from the heat of the kiln, Naoya Arakawa’s large bowl captures the thawing surface of an icy pond in masterfully hand-blown glass. It is one of many innovative techniques the artist applies to his traditional practice of hand-blowing and -shaping glass, along with the rough edges he hews with scissors, softening their sharp edges with heat.
