Marking the first foray into fluted-glass lighting from founders Stephen Alesch and Robin Standefer, the Fluted Glass Seed is an evolution of the best-selling
Seed Pendant, a hanging lighting fixture resembling an elongated seed pod that debuted in 2022. The new Fluted Seed lights are blown and sculpted by hand in a multi-generational, family-owned Brooklyn glass studio in two unique tones: pale Aubergine and iridescent Opaline. Each piece is one-of-a-kind, with subtle variations in bubbling, rippling, and finish revealing the touch and technique of the glassblower. A small team of blacksmiths from a 150-year-old Parisian foundry also worked as an extension of Alesch and Standefer’s hand, using ceramic molds to cast the pendant’s canopy in bronze and assembling each link of the hanging chain individually.
About the Designers
Stephen Alesch and Robin Standefer are the founders and principals of Roman and Williams, Roman and Williams Guild, La Mercerie, and Guild Gallery. In addition to finding and assembling the world’s most prodigious artists for their modern guild of the senses, the husband-and-wife team prolifically makes, creates, and leads. In their work, nature serves as a timeless source of inspiration for the future of how we live.
Each hand-made detail is considered, from fabric-wrapping its cord to hand-assembling each bronze link of its hanging chain individually.
Designers Alesch and Standefer sought to capture the effect of light passing through rippling water and the transfixing nature of rare jewels in glass.
Whether displayed individually as a single fixture or as a constellation of lights in mix-and-match colorways, each Fluted Seed Pendant illuminates no two rooms the same.
Though remarkably consistent, subtle, characteristic variations in bubbling, rippling, and finish reveal the hand of the glassblower.
To achieve the ripples in the glass shade, a master glassblower pushes molten glass through a star-shaped mold, stamping it with a fluted impression that remains as it is free-blown into its final size and shape.
