Petra Egg Shade Pendant
Starting at $5,700 USD
In an evolving exploration of ornamentation, material, and form, the new Petra Lighting Collection introduces the Petra Egg to the Roman and Williams Guild Original Designs lighting collection in one profound material: alabaster.
Designed by Robin Standefer and Stephen Alesch, this new pendant combines familiar vocabularies: the RWGOD foundational Globe Collection’s glass Egg shade, now reimagined in smooth, hand-carved alabaster, a material that has recently captivated the designers (see the undulating shades of the Rotonde Sconce and Dahlia Table Lamp). Carved by master craftspeople in Spain from solid alabaster and secured to a brass stem hand-spun in France, the Petra Egg's smooth surface emits a glow that illuminates any atmosphere.
About the Designers
Stephen Alesch and Robin Standefer are the founders and principals of Roman and Williams, Roman and Williams Guild, La Mercerie, and Guild Gallery. In addition to finding and assembling the world’s most prodigious artists for their modern guild of the senses, the husband-and-wife team prolifically makes, creates, and leads. In their work, nature serves as a timeless source of inspiration for the future of how we live.
Collapsing centuries within techniques, each shade is a feat of stone carving, hand-shaped by masters in Spain from a solid 12” block of alabaster, carefully selected for its ideal transparency and veining.
The shade is secured in a 150-year-old French foundry to a hand-spun brass stem by a new fitter that celebrates the functionality of hardware in its details: both the custom thumb screws and coupling are fluted.
Alesch and Standefer join millennia of makers transfixed by the skin-softening glow of illuminated alabaster—believed by ancient Egyptians to possess healing powers.
