Martin Pearce
EAST SUSSEX, ENGLAND

Under his father’s tutelage, Martin Pearce threw his first pot at age 10.  The experience stayed with him and even though he later trained in and practiced interior design, he soon returned to clay. Fifty years after that first pot, Martin finds he is still discovering, developing, learning.  The development of form is at the root of his work; the interplay of shape and surface creating the individual character of a piece. Non-figurative in nature, his pieces present many points of reference - biomorphic, molecular or topographical. Expressing ambiguity via abstraction, raising questions for the viewer and the maker.

Martin lives and works in rural East Sussex in a house and studio hidden at the end of a long drive. The Sussex landscape is a strong influence on him, the muscular flanks of the South Down hills, the striated cliffs, the tumbled quartz and chalk on the beaches, ground down and polished by the actions of the waves, the shape and foliage of the surrounding trees. And his dog is always ready to join me when he decides it is time to walk and think about the pieces he has in progress.
