Create An AccountMotivated by nature Barry Canter creates his works one piece at a time. His vessels are connected through their cylindrical shape, yet no two are exactly the same.
Hand built using traditional slab construction, each form is made from the scale of Canter’s own hand. The resulting forms are sensuous and beg to be touched.

Canter lives in Brooklyn, and often travels to the Hudson Valley where he finds inspiration from natural artifacts that appear to be designed by an artisan. Just as objects in nature exist for their own purpose, Canter captures in his ceramic vessels a self-justified oneness. He pares away references to familiar forms, and works on one piece at a time to achieve a singular focus.
Over the last five years he’s put in 40+ hours a week, using traditional slab construction to build vessels based on the scale of his hand. The resulting forms are sensuous and inviting to touch, offering a place for the hand to fit comfortably. They are asking to be picked up, just like the objects that inspired them.
