Red Lacquer Bowl

by Osamu Matsuzaki

Traditional lacquer, from the lac bug, is extremely difficult to apply. Many coats are required to build up a durable shell, and the workpiece must dry completely in between each or else risk cracking.

Most artisans attempt to create a perfect and smooth finish, but Osamu Matsuzaki's work is prized for it's unique touch: heavy, uneven, and somewhat heretical.
